PHIL390 Honours Seminar (Free Will)
Do we have free will? Can developments in science help to settle this longstanding philosophical question? In this seminar, we will examine the free will debate with a special focus on whether research in physics and psychology should change the way we think about free will. The seminar will be organized around two books: (1) J.T. Ismael's How Physics Makes Us Free, and (2) Daniel M. Wegner's The Illusion of Conscious Will. If time permits, we may also look at some experimental philosophy research on the source of compatibilist and incompatibilist intuitions.
